about

BLOXHAM RESEARCH GROUP (BRG) is a psychogeographic & hauntological research support group by subscription. An unincorporated association, the BRG does not publish membership details or accounts.

An audio investigation into both the physical and cultural landscape by the BRG, 'The Bloxham Tape' concerns the medieval spires of the parish churches of Adderbury, Bloxham and Kings Sutton, which form a distinctive triangle around the South Northamptonshire border.

As politicised forms of radical nostalgia, both psychogeography and hauntology identify the hidden counternarratives that haunt official versions of history and heritage. This recording investigates the interzone between psychogeography and hauntology.

The creative potential of pattern recognition, particularly when mapping relationships between geographical points, are of great interest to our researchers. Such speculative investigations could be categorised as psychogeography.

In the first decade of the 21st century, hauntology became an influential term for describing the disparate production of various artists, cultural theorists, filmmakers and, most notably, musicians. These cultural producers share a concern for the lost futures that haunt our present. Sensory Leakage also shares these concerns, as this psychogeographical research revealed a troubling misalignment between the spires of these aforementioned churches.

'The Bloxham Tape' field recordings were made over a 48-hour period at the end of September 2015. Findings were readied for public consumption over the course of an additional 48 hour period, during which time additional site-specific instrumentation was introduced. The results were mixed, mastered and cut to eight-inch lathe the following day.

This second-edition cassette is for domestic use only. The BRG thanks you for your interest in this project.
